Naphthalene-1,4-dione CAS:130-15-4
Naphthalene-1,4-dione finds extensive application as an industrial chemical intermediate. It acts as a building block in the synthesis of various dyes and pigments via condensation, oxidation and reduction reactions. Many azo dyes used in coloring fabrics, paints and inks are produced from 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives. It is also used to manufacture the redox dye methylene blue through nitro reductions. In pharmaceuticals, Naphthalene-1,4-dione derives vitamin K drugs by reacting it with substituted phenols. Its quinone structure allows it to undergo additions and condensations under basic conditions. 1,4-Naphthoquinone is valuable as a fungicide agent too. Additionally, this compound plays a role in the production of certain polymers and plastics. It condenses with formaldehyde to give 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene polymers used in coatings and adhesives. Electrochemistry and analytical laboratories employ Naphthalene-1,4-dione for redox titrations owing to its reversible redox chemistry.
